110 - Fandom wankery aside, I agree with this. I'm a bit of a history buff, and it just made sense to me. I agree with diversity for everyone else, but come on. Let's some whities in there. I don't care what anyone says Jet is like latino or something.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised that you're a history buff and "tiny island nation that industrializes before its neighbors and conquers them using sea power and technology" doesn't scream Japan to you.

[identity profile] kyatto.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I see that too. The point is it could represent several points in history. There are multiple sides to everything.

What I'm really surprised at is that no one's said "LOL America VS Middle East" yet. Really, it could fit any of that.

POINT - I can see where everyone is coming from, and I don't care if the movie turns out to be good.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
There are multiple sides, but some are just more accurate than others. Avatar is Asian - that's just... what it is and how it was intended. You're entitled to your opinion, but if your opinion is that they're white then you're wrong?

(Anonymous) 2009-01-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that straight-forward. Asian influences are the predominant, yes, but don't you think it's a little unreasonable to insist that everybody in the entire world be of Asian/Mongolian decent? Especially when you've got the Water Tribe, a race that is clearly *not* Asian but whose culture has Asian influences. When you consider that, is it really so much of a stretch to say that the Fire Nation may be a white race with a clearly Asian-influenced culture, in the same vein?

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it's not unreasonable, that's the way the creators made it. And the Inuit are of Asian descent. What's unreasonable is trying to shoehorn white people into the world. You could say there's some western influence in this Asian world, but I'm tired of people pretending as if its the other way around. They're Asian. That's that. This shouldn't even be up for discussion.

This. It baffles me that this is even being talked about.

No, it doesn't.

Japan has only been an industrial nation really for the last 150 years. For over two hundred years before that, they closed themselves off to everyone. Not exactly industrious. Besides, what technology are you talking about? The Japanese didn't come up with gunpowder. That was the Chinese. They weren't known as expert map makers, again, that was the Chinese. The Chinese also invented the compass. Where were Japan's inventions to help conquer the world?

Japan doesn't even have a history of exploration unlike the Chinese who had Zheng He, who traveled East Africa, India and the Middle East, Ma Huan who explored Java, Bengal and Mecca and Wang Dayuan, who explored India and North Africa.) It was the Chinese who had Imperial fleets for ions. Japan was able to get their first Imperial Fleet in the 19th century. Until then, it was the shoguns who supplied the ships.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I merely meant to say that certainly in the late 19th and early 20th c Japan was doing these things. That doesn't mean that no one else was. The larger point, that this wasn't only done by Western countries, I think we agree on.

[identity profile] hafl.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in 16th century some Japanese people did travel abroad. Nothing was organized by central authority, because there was none. When it was reestablished, the central authority tried either to conquer China (Hideyoshi) or to gain total control over the population (Tokugawas).

Also, Japan got Imperial fleet only in the 19th century, because since the 12th century most emperors were only the de iure rulers of Japan, while the Shogun was ruler de facto.

White people are overly represented in pop culture. One movie with no white characters isn't going to hurt them. Besides, the problem is with making all of the main characters white when canon says they're not.

[identity profile] kyatto.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW THIS. I DO.

I really want to point fandom to the Drama High documentary. Because as much as I would have liked to see no white people and pretty Asians and whatnot, I'm not going to bitch about a few white people. (Seriously - the cast ISN'T solid yet. Everyone but Aang and Katara are "in talks".) It's just..not worth the aggravation until something more solid comes out. :/
