So, which authors do you read?

I've read lots of authors; why should I make a list? I'll give examples if you really want, but I don't see how it's relevant. I've just never seen the technique in question used in published works that I can recall, so I don't see why fic writers think it makes them good writers if they do it. And I'm not saying all writers HAVE to be good, but you should want to be the best you can, and stuff like that that sticks out like sore thumbs just isn't good writing. If you're writing for yourself, do whatever you want, but don't argue that what you're doing is any good. And if you don't care if it's not good, why even argue over this?

But what'd be really awesome is if people actually listened to what I'm saying, instead of flaying me for saying a lot of fic is bad. And no, I'm not the secret's OP.

Dude, defensive comment is defensive. I'm just asking out of curiosity because I'm looking for something to read. I'll judge for myself whether the authors are good or not when I read them, not before.

LATELY I read a lot of Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Mercedes Lackey, and in the past Margaret Weiss. The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman is one of my favorites.

To be honest, I had a passing fit of snark, but eh, I figured it was childish and would rather have book recs instead. So no, no hard feelings on my part. Hope there's none on yours.

As for your recs, hmm. I've read some of Mercedes Lackey's work, tend to favor Terry Brooks over Terry Pratchett, and am sort of meh on Gaiman as he tends to be too popular for my tastes.

Margaret Weiss, however, is someone whose books I would read any time. That woman is a brilliant writer and I wish I could crawl into her head and sleep in it in the hopes that I could absorb some of her talent.

Oh man, couldn't agree more on Margaret. I need to read some of her older stuff besides Death Gate Cycle. It's certainly been awhile, and I'd actually read that series again if I can locate it.

Gaiman... It's funny because when I first read him I didn't realize he was popular. I just assumed I'd found another author no one else knew or cared about. Imagine my surprise to find that he had QUITE a following. I don't base my tastes on popularity, nor would I have avoided him if I'd known, but it is admittedly nice to know there's always people to discuss with.
