Well, I'm not in the fandom (so I didn't know there were novels comics etc. o_O), but from seeing the movies with my little sister, I've always thought of him as gay-but-Disney-is-too-conservative-to-admit-it, so I was happy to see that and figured I'd share. But everyone has a right to ship him with whoever they want. *shrug*

Hell, I *worked* for Disney and I agree with you-- except in my head, it was "bi-but-Disney-is-too-conservative-to-admit-it." The only reason is because I also got exposed to the other forms of the canon (except the concert and stage musical; the only "stage musical" I saw was the "High School Musical 2: School's Out!" stage sing-along when I worked at the resort, and that was like, 15 minutes of singing and "Bye-bye!"

Hell, I think there are some pretty strong implications that Sharpay and Ryan have something more than a brotherly/sisterly relationship, but you know Disney wouldn't go THERE.

I guess I see things through the "bi" lens rather than "slash goggles" because I myself am bi. It's easier to think of characters -whether they're "in the closest" or timidly sticking a foot out, or very flamboyant and "pretty obvious, but STILL...." as bi because then no one's wrong. The slasher still 'ship him, the het fans still 'ship him; everyone's happy.

I, for one, am glad Disney (whether or not they "allow" for people to be forthright with their sexuality, even if the characters aren't the MAIN characters/sexuality isn't the topic of the show/whatever. Ryan's existence is pretty damn awesome in that respect, because it at least acknowledges that there are other people out there than the so-called "norm" of
Prince Charming and Princess Wonderful.

But if that means all of a sudden fans start going "DID YOU NOT WATCH THE [VERSION OF CANON], HE WAS SO GAY!; WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, PAIRING HIM WITH [FEMALE CHARACTER]!?!?" it seems so hypocritical. Some uptight het fans do that to slash fics and I think it's lame (don't like; don't read), but for slash fans to do it to het fans? Pot, kettle, black!

In the same way, I'm a ~~somewhat-closeted teenage~~ lesbian, so I tend to kinda go scouting for gay characters sometimes. I'm sure you understand how amazingly depressing mainstream romantic comedies and the like can be sometimes. So in that respect, I definitely agree with you that Ryan's existence is awesome, whatever categorization one wants to use for it.

I hate it when fans of any kind start flaming each other and doing stuff like that. DX Let's just play nice, kids.
