It was basically a group of people with a huge circle-jerk of confirmation bias desperately grasping at straws in stupid things like drinks and nightclub lighting to "prove" that they HAD to be right, even though the creators said no, we're not doing that, and they were telling the truth all along.

It doesn't help that the TJLC ringleaders were a bunch of abusive, vicious bullies who hounded the cast and crew in the most cringeworthy ways possible and absolutely no-mercy shredded even other Johnlock shippers who dared to question the sacred prophecy (or ship it with the wrong guy on top).

Yeah, I don't blame most of the younger fans whose first big fandom experience was Johnlock, but I absolutely blame the older fans (like Gracee) who bullied, harrassed, and accused people of pedophilia for shipping a pairing of two 30-something men in the wrong configuration!

Because the one on the bottom is "child-coded" I think? But really the honest explanation is that in fandom pedophilia means "ship I don't like."

The main argument was basically, "Many people who ship toplock like to depict Sherlock as this dark, manipulative sociopath who rapes or coerces John, which is gross and wrong to kink on. Also sometimes the toplockers like to create fanworks in which John is depicted as significantly underage and Sherlock is fucking him, which is gross pedophile shit."

They were correct about there being a correlation between lovers of dark content and toplock. Toplock had far more dark content created for it than bottomlock. However, that obviously doesn't justify the major anti behavior some of them engaged in over said dark content.

It really all boiled down to a personal grudge and jealousy of popular artists and writers from before the TJLC ringleaders got to be BNFs through their bullshit cult stuff.

Firm disagree. A lot of them were genuinely repulsed by that kind of dark content, and honestly believed it was toxic, and that there was something troublingly wrong with people who kinked on it.

Not sure about Gracee, though. She definitely seems to be a person who instigates shit for her own purposes. So yeah, for her it probably wasn't genuine moralizing.

A lot of it started out being specifically targeted at Michi and Archia, whose fic/art respectively had some dark elements sometimes, but overall was pretty tame by fandom standards.

Michi had formerly been a friend of some of the big-name artists who aligned with Gracee and others - that was when the fandom learned that if you really want to take someone down, the most effective tactic is a false accusation of pedophilia.

A few people were sincere maybe, but the overwhelming motivation was the power trip.

CITATION FUCKING NEEDED. I was in the fandom then and I don't think I ever came across a sexually explicit fic where John was a child and Sherlock an adult. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, just that I never saw it. It certainly wasn't widespread or common.

Michi definitely drew some heavily underage stuff. She did not remotely deserve any of the shit she got for it, but to act like it wasn't a huge chunk of her Johnlock fanart is just factually incorrect. And she was the one who ended up being the eye of the storm target for that particular bout of wank and bullying. Look her up if you need to. I have no idea if any of her Johnlock art is still up, considering how much anti attention she ended up getting.

Also, maybe you weren't as deep into the fandom, because I definitely saw several instances of straight up "pre-pubescent John gets fucked by adult Sherlock" fanart. They all got taken down after more than just the usual antis expressed extreme discomfort over them.

Michi is a writer, not an artist. She wrote a greaser AU where Sherlock and John are both teenagers. Her girlfriend Archia is probably the artist you're thinking of.

The really funny part is that Gracee, Taikova, Ivorylungs and a bunch of their godawful friends were really into the Fawnlock AU, especially a version of it where Fawnlock (Sherlock as a deerlike faun creature) talks like a three-year-old and has no idea what his penis is for. Adult!John lovingly explains it to him and demonstrates.

I don't care, I don't judge this kind of stuff, but it is waaaayyyyyy more pedo-ish than anything any of their victims made.

LOLOLOL. When you scratch the surface of a moral scold, you find hypocrisy every.single.time. It would be hilarious if they hadn't done so much real harm to so many people.

I do blame the younger fans, because appropriate human behavior is appropriate human behavior. Even if you are a 14 year old bi-girl who hangs her self worth on a 30 year old detective being a gay detective. Not bullying and treating people with kindness is kind of basic shit we should all be picking up on by kindergarten.

Also, if you haven't learned that shit by your teens, you damn well better learn it now, and the way you learn is by getting called on your shitty behavior and facing some consequences for it. Letting bullies off the hook just because they're kids doesn't do them or their future victims any favors.
