There are many languages that are mutually intelligible, but the degree of how intelligible they are depends. Spanish is significantly intelligible with Portuguese when written, but asymmetrical intelligible when spoken.

That's something very relevant to my interests--my native language is French, I learned Spanish and bits of Latin and I hope that's enough to go read some very niche fics that are written in Portuguese, without missing too much of their gist?
