After the fall of Rome, Italy became a collection of small city-states.
The Austrian throne poured a great deal of money into arts and music, so they were able to gather and support the very best of musicians. The Vienna Boys' Choir is reputed to have been there since the 15th century.
Stuff I hadn't know before that I learned from one page of Hetalia. Yeah, some of it is obvious, but I could never get too into history, so it's nice to find it with tidbits in a memorable form that ALSO makes me want to look further into stuff on my own.
Things I also learned from Hetalia? That the Holy Roman Empire and Italy were both part of Austria at one point (or that part of Italy was, while Southern Italy was taken over by Spain). I never knew about Sealand (especially that England used to own it) and that the "ruler" tried to sell it on EBay after a fire, that Switzerland is the biggest producer of guns in the world, or that Texas used to be its own republic before it was annexed to the US.
I'll be the first to admit that I love the series for the characters' interactions and personalities, not so much the fact that they're thus-and-so country, and I'm certainly not taking it as a history book. But the little tidbits are always really interesting and make me want to learn more. So whether you hate it or not, just think a little before saying "nobody could possibly like this series for this reason, they're lying!" because it comes across as really judgemental and douchy, and the rabid defenders and rabid haters both have enough fuel to keep going on forever as it is.
