Re: 114
Hey now, I don't see why not sharing fandoms makes a difference in talking to people :P The majority of people I talk into in RL are into completely different things then I am (read: completely) and the people I talk to online the most are usually people from fandoms I've grown out of. You never know, it's possible to get people into stuff.
Buddy, I don't know if it's just me, but usually I prefer the pre-romance tension way more than the actual romance. It's just more exciting to me, to see how they deal with their feelings and how the relationship develops. It's probably why I'm a bit less likely to read fics in which the characters are already involved, unless I'm in a "whatever goes" mood or if I already like the author. Even if I know that they're just going to get together in the end, if well written, that kind of tension never gets old.
Exactly! Cause inspiration is rarely ever "I sat down at my desk and thought REALLY HARD about what I wanted to write." God knows that when I wrote fic it never worked like that, most of my ideas came when I didn't even have a pen and paper near me :P Actually, ideas are still coming to me when I'm doing stuff like making coffee, even if I'm taking a break from writing these days.
I approve of your sharing inspirational things. Inspiration is heaps better than all that cynicism going around these days.
Re: 114
And definitely! I adore the pre-romance tension. It's one of my favorite things to write about. In fact, I like keeping that tension going for a long, long time. But then again, if you look at real life, you'll see that tension has a way of following from pre-romance to romance. No relationship is perfect. While I enjoy happy endings, and while it's nice for one-shots or drabbles to end on a sweet kiss or something, in the real world, it doesn't work that way. So long stories should, in my opinion, never end there. But they shouldn't keep going with the new couple working in perfect harmony, either. After all, something kept them apart for X amount of time, yes? Insecurities? Difference of rank? Socially awkward? Something kept them apart. So having that (the problems, circumstances, insecurities, et cetera) follow them into the relationship not only makes sense, it's fun to write and, the best part, it's fun to read, too.
I'll admit...I wish I could just sit down and think REALLY HARD about what to write and have epic ideas come to me. But that never happens. Actually, to combat never having pen and paper with me, I carry a pen in my shirt pocket at work-- I work in a factory-- and I have four notebooks for writing in my purse. Yes. Four. Decent-sized notebooks. One is for Fandom A, one is for Fandom B, one is for requests, and one WAS for NaNoWriMo, but is now for the drabble collection I'm working on. (
And thank you. Sorry for rambling so much! ♥
Re: 114
The only problem is that the longer you keep the tension going, people being to expect a really grand pay off, or they expect that the scene in which they do reveal their feelings will be an incredibly passionate one. You make a really good point about that there was something that kept them apart for so long. I mean, sometimes it's nice to see awkward bits. Actually, it's not even that I just like seeing character X feel awkward when he hears that his feelings for character Y are mutual because he can't believe it, but I also find it really endearing when even their physical efforts totally fall short of the best kiss ever or mindblowing sex.
I remember awhile ago I was ranting how sometimes I just wish there were more unrequited love fics. I was in the mood for them. True, I understand why they're never going to be very popular, but still.
Not that I'm knocking feel-good romance, of course not. I'd be a hypocrite, seeing how much of that kind of fanfic I've read 8D It's funny though, I rarely read any romance books because I pretty much get my entire romance fix through fanfiction. So it's hard explaining myself when people claim that I'm anti-romance or what have you when they look at the kind of books and movies and shows I'm into. For the record, I don't actually talk about my fandom participation to maybe 99% of my friends in real life. This might have something to do with the fact that 95% of them don't even know what fandom is.
I used to carry around a notebook, but it was kind of a useless effort because I wouldn't want to bring it out in public. I'm always nervous that I'll leave it somewhere or someone will look at what I'm writing. I'm just one of those people that are paranoid about everything and also really embarrassed about things that shouldn't be embarrassing.
Good luck on the 365drabbles challenge!
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT RAMBLING AROUND ME. EVER. I couldn't scrutinize someone for rambling when I'm notorious for rambling myself. Also, I think that chunky paragraphs in replies are heaps more interesting to read than just sentences.
Re: 114
Oh, definitely! I'm not a perfectionist, but sometimes I like to think I'm a realist. I like my 'fic to be as realistic as possible. At least, when I write it. I guess it doesn't matter as much when other people write it. But for me, I don't want people to read it and know that it's impossible. I'm also a big fan of failing physical efforts. For example, the two fandoms I'm in? The main male character in both fandoms, and the main female in one are all really, really, REALLY inexperienced. The other girl, well, she's more upbeat and likely to try anyway, but she's got no experience under her belt, either. So I love that. It gives me room to play in my 'ficbox. Building 'ficcastles and such, you know. =P
First efforts in kissing might be awkward. Anything else might be awkward too, especially if you're writing about reserved characters. Not that mindblowingly awesome sex isn't, uh, great, I suppose, but it's not very realistic between a couple that spent X amount of time apart wanting to be together. They need time to get comfortable around one another and with each other. Lots of embarrassment and awkward situations and confusion and probably misunderstandings. Gah, human beings are so complex. We love misunderstanding what other people say. Or it seems like that, anyway.
Really? I'm the same way. Most of my favorite books aren't romances. In fact, none of them are. I think the closest one might be Memoirs of a Geisha. And it's not romance-driven, really. It was, however, very fascinating. It wasn't until about two months ago that I even realized that my favorite books weren't romances. Which I thought was pretty darn odd considering I write it so much. Also, I'm totally the only young person on the face of the planet who reads/used to read Christian Romance, which is definitely a genre all its own.
I have very few real life friends, so I don't discuss fandom much at all. I do, however, make up for that by rambling incessantly on my journal. Especially if I find something to rant about. And I always do.
Oh, and yes. Well, one day, someone at work got snoopy and opened my notebook and read it aloud at break while I was in the restroom. Yeah...they teased me about it for like, months. They're still doing it. Why? Because one of the lines said something about becoming one in front of God. But that line was stated in the anime/manga itself, so it wasn't like something I totally made up. They still love to bring it up, though. I played it off cool even though it was hard. Nothing annoys me more than people snooping around in my stuff IRL when they don't even know or honestly care what I'm even writing about.
Thank you!
And I'll remember that. You might regret it. =P I agree, though. I like getting long replies from people. It's fun. =D
