You're welcome. Seriously, if I ever had to defend why I like Hetalia, I'm going to somewhat be paraphasing your argument. Not trying to suck up, it's just that I was thinking something along those lines but could never really elaborate on it, and you explained it eloquently than I could. :) When I first heard of it, I knew it was potentially offensive and was skeptical about it. Then I just gave in and read it-and I ended up loving it. And just like you said, it was because even though they were technically countries, the characters were so loveable. And yeah, I ship stuff, but I don't read that much pairing fanfic, let alone porn.

I've heard of people who hated history in school, yet have become geniunely interested in it because of like you said, the characters. Most history classes only emphasize dates and what happened on those dates. "In *insert year here*, such-and-such happened." Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's necessary for educating history, but you lose your audience. But Hetalia grabs that audience because it puts a face on those events with characters that people could relate to themselves and to other people in their lives; like historical fiction in books, movies, etc. but in a different way by making its character personified nations. Part of it is that Hetalia develops little interesting tidbits into it strips-such as some WWII Russian troopers who jumped out of a plane without a parachute because they thought the snow would be soft enough to save them, or America trying to develop a gun that would make combatants on the battlefield fall in love with each other (srsly that's true (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bomb) wtf). Another part is...well, compare the two: "The Pact of Steel was signed on May 22, 1939 by Germany and Italy" to two men, one a no-nonsense kind of guy and one who's kind of a ditz, making a pinky swear to help each other out if any one of them is in trouble. Go to a fan post, change the countries' names to those like "Naruto," "Ichigo," "Ed," or whathaveyou and it just seems like a regular fandom. Take away the fact that the main trio are the Axis Powers, and it's a comedic duo of a rules stickler, the stoic, and the airhead; and take away the fact that the other five main characters are the Allies and you have the Five Man Band (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveManBand). Sure, it's the fact that it uses countries that's the problem for some people, but it seems to me like they are characters first, just interacting in the way and making similar choices as their national namesake. And I'm sure that fans are not stupid enough to believe that all German, Japanese, and Italian people are "rules sticklers, stoics, and airheads", nor are they stupid enough to believe that the nation as a whole and in general is like that.

orz

Looks like I went a bit tl;dr there. o.o

Haha, no worries, I tl;dr all the time.

And I'm just glad my explanation worked! I'm often afraid I make no sense when I blather, so it's good to hear. And I can hear you on the shipping -- I vaguely ship a few things, and totally ship Austria/Hungary because orz best married couple ever, but I've barely even touched fic in the fandom besides one or two genfics that were history-based 'cos they got linked here (including the kink-meme response with no romance that had Canada ranting at America about his people's behavior being why the country can't have nice things XD). And if I'm not looking at fanfiction or porn in one of my fandoms, SOMETHING IS ODD. I'm not even opposed to the porn, though I'd probably avoid the rape because the little voice in the back of my head going "... real history D:" would squick me too much, I just... haven't touched it for some odd reason.

AND YES, WORD, THIS IS ME. I couldn't get interested in history at all in school, because it was all... rote memorization and stale facts and rarely had any sort of human face put to it, and I have realized that I actually have very little interest in any classwork that I can't associate with personalities (just names doesn't work) or music. The Revolutionary War? Should be much more interesting than the way it's taught in schools. I always thought it was sort of a neat subject, but nothing ever stuck. One of the first Hetalia comics I read was America cleaning out his attic and remembering England, including during the Revolutionary War, and suddenly I'm really interested again -- I'm a sap but that whole scene made me tear up. And you're right, putting a mental image like that to the fact and date just helps it stick for me.

I personally can't bring myself to have any problem with the stereotypes of the characters, if only because they're based on the nation itself throughout history rather than the people of that nation. Saying that America has a history of being brash and loud and jumping into wars isn't the same thing as saying all Americans are brash, loud warmongers, so I can't be insulted by that. I can certainly see why people could be offended, and easily so -- how it would be hard for some people to seperate the characters-as-countries from the characters-as-people, and how that fact could make it impossible for them to enjoy the comic. That's fine, and I'm sorry that they don't like it and were upset over it, and hope they have fun with what they love, just like we do. It's just ridiculous to paint all fans as horrible people because we like a controversial series, and I'm pretty darn sure that's all most of us have a problem with here, though many are dealing with it badly and... should stop that. >_>

... Also, oh my. America's aphrodesiac bomb. I. I haven't gotten to that one yet. T_T
