Hear hear, to both sentiments!

I don't understand why most of fandom needs to define characters as dominant/submissive in the first place. Personally, I find a balanced relationship far more interesting then some seme/uke, so-and-so is always on bottom because he's smaller/shyer/nicer or what the hell ever while the asshole/"manly"/egotist is always on top. Boring! Unrealistic! And uncharacteristic is most cases!

Sorry if I come off a little strong about this. I am just sick to death of it, as you say you are. I am glad someone finds the same problems I have with it all.

Heh, actually I like seme/uke unrealistic as it may be (frankly, I'm not in BL for the nonexistent realism factor :D) - what I don't like and can't understand for my life is why the Western fandom is so obsessed with it meaning "dominant/submissive" when it does not. Sure, there are popular stereotypes but it's not like they're rules, as an infinite number of fanworks prove. And it's not just fandom's conception of seme/uke, it seems to be a prevalent attitude to m/m in general. I'm so tired of people saying "don't feminize the bottoms!" then turning around and implying that being on bottom is somehow emasculating. What the hell.

Look at the pairing in the secret - England is anything but submissive (or shy or nice... okay, he's shorter than most of the gang but I often see him being topped by Japan who is a lot shorter and much nicer than him :D). When he appears as submissive in a fanfic/fanart, it's not because of him being uke or whatever, it's because the author chose to characterize him that way. But it's as if a large part of fandom didn't understand this concept, and they keep using the words "uke" and "bottom" as if they were insults or something. It just ticks me off.

(By the way, my god your icon is adorable. xD)

Ah, pardon then. It seems I was under the impression that that is what it meant. I should take a class in Japanese. >>

I do understand your meaning though. When I write for that fandom I, more often than not, put England on the bottom and it's not for any "feminized" qualities he may have, and isn't that a loaded word seeing as I don't consider "feminine" a gendered synonym for submissive in the first place and that's opening up a whole other can of worms! XD;

But yes, in regards to the secret, I saw it and it just instantly got on my nerves because of the fact that it does indeed assume the bottom is somehow weaker and that being on the bottom is somehow offensive. (Isn't France also supposed to be the same height as England? And lol to Japan. I...can see that! Oh, Japan! XD) So, to be clear; agreed! Agreed! Agreed!

(Thank you! :D)
