Hard same.

Agreed. I want to watch Hannibal just to see if what everyone says about this pairing is true, but my stomach refuses to let me enjoy it. I'm too squeamish.

Might surprise you. For a long time, my sisters tried to get me into it but I refused because it seemed so morbid. I like dark narratives but I hate stories about serial killers. But she showed me the very last scene and I was totally hooked. I've watched it 6 times the whole way through by now and I always find new stuff to love about it. It's gruesome and Hannibal is evil but it's fascinating and emotional and I like it a lot. I ship it but I don't like murderhusbands BTW. I'm just in it for the way they're drawn to each other no matter how hard Will tries to resist. The ending is kind of best ending, imo, because I don't want to see Will twist himself, trying to negotiate his love for Hannibal and his disgust for what Hannibal does (to innocent but rude people). Sorry, very long comment..

Hannibal is also not my usual thing: too dark/sadistic, too gruesome (especially in a body horror way). Somehow, I still ended up watching most of it. I think it was partially the character dynamics and partially the beautiful cinematography. But if cannibalism is really a hard no-go line for the OP, I'd say it's hard to skip over the fast amounts of food porn (which is often cannibalistic).

That's in terms of the actual TV show. I can't really speak to the fanfiction, although several of the few fics I've read don't really feature cannibalism at all.

Oh, I don't read fic for it so I can't really say.

Cannibalism is gross but what really SUPER turns me off this ship is the obnoxious cutsy-fying that a lot of the fans do with hannibal. No, he isn't in any way ~soft or ~sweet or any uwu type of shit, he's a fuckin stone cold killer and that's why it's interesting. I hate how practically every fandom with even a smidge of edginess in it always has a contingent of people denying the edge or trying really hard to make it seem like it's really ever so precious.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-19 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS so hard, although in my case is with Will: He's neither a soft uwu uke dude, he's strong enough to kill someone with his bare hands if he needs too.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, bring me my in character murder spouses

(Anonymous) 2020-12-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship it hard but yeah, it annoys me when people softify the pairing. I'm in it for the tortured yearning and battle between them, not cutesy stuff.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's hard to sort through fic to find the good stuff. Like, I'm not here for Hannibal fluff. (But I get that some people are.)

What gets me personally is when the 'happy' ending for the pairing is just Hannibal and Will murdering whoever looks at them funny, with no problems at all on Will's part. Even IF he did run away with Hannibal, they have verrrrry different ideas about who deserves to die. And that would always be a source of conflict. Gimme that conflict!

I had my doubts too and started tentatively poking around on tumblr. That's where I came across a Hannibal fan account where the user icon was the fan in question pretending to be a cannibal eating raw meat. I have never noped out of a fandom so fucking fast in my life.

Eww

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite - I love cannibalism in fiction (as well as the psychology and philosophical ramifications behind it) but just can't deal with regular ol' murder.

so....like consensual killing or found corpses or??????????

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not really related to the secret but, Gillian Anderson's character annoyed the crap out of me throughout the entire show. The first time I've absolutely hated her in anything.

Just talk faster! Make some sense! Worst psychiatrist ever! (Besides Hannibal maybe)

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I agree completely. I love her as Dana Scully and think she's awesome in Sex Education and I love Hannibal, but goddddd, I can't stand her as Bedelia. Just...nothing...makes sense...and she whispers practically everything. Hate it.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
SA as above-
Oh! And it practically ruins the "Hannibal loves me?" discussion with Will because everything they say is virtual nonsense that doesn't seem coherent as an actual conversation. Wtf. I can still take something from it as a shipper but it's honestly one of the weakest parts of the show. Though nothing really tops the Mystical Asian Chiyoh- who exists as a plot device and is too young by TWENTY YEARS to be a peer to Hannibal.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-20 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah, there's nothing wrong with cannibalism... But the rest of the horror and gore in that series is horribly disturbing, so I totally get what you're saying.
