Some of the best, most simple advice I ever got was from a career musician: for work there must be pay, and for pay there must be work.

Which in this case meant that if music is your profession it is perfectly acceptable to refuse to play for free at parties. But it also meant that if someone is paying you money to do something, you give them their money's worth in return.
