Plus the way that she gets on Chouji's case about his appearance is hardly mean-spirited, and Chouji himself brushes it off casually enough. Seriously, those bitches on Team 7 hog all the screen time with their angst, but I like the friendship and camaraderie of Team 10 the best out of the rookies. Haters to the left.

Don't get me wrong, I love Chouji and Shikamaru. I think Ino's just a bitch, and what there PAST bitch isn't much better (Boy crazy, shallow, appearance obsessed, etc) I respect her as a ninja, and a fighter, but as a person? No.

Dude, did you know that Asuma was also depicted ragging on Chouji for his eating habits? There is vilifying someone for something they can't help, and then there is ribbing between friends, and while the latter can be thoughtless and lead to people's feelings being hurt, I doubt that Chouji, who's basically known Ino all his life, would be able to remain her friend if he were seriously bothered by Ino's bullying.

Anyway, I can't believe that I'm arguing about Naruto of things at this point, but I'll just have to disagree with you on your assessment of Ino. This coming from someone who doesn't see her character as a particularly strong and effective ninja, at least not the way she's written post timeskip. I'm just surprised that, out of all the crappy behaviors various characters in that series tend to display, someone would decide that this, out of everything, is utterly irredeemable.

Dude, I don't like is much when Asuma does it either. He doesn't get a by anymore then Ino does. In fact i thought it was pretty douche that that was like...the last thing he said to Chouji. And I don't think Ino is the most vile character in all of Naruto. She just happens to be, you know, the one we're discussing. The secret wasn't about "Who is your least favorite Naruto character?"

I've been in that position. It's not cool. And yes, you smile and take it because they ARE your friends. it's particularly nasty when BOTH of them do it because, hi, Chouji would die if he wasn't fat and used his powers. He almost did when he WAS fat and used it. There are other unreedamble things people have done, but her's does stick out a bit more as she is doing it to a friend she's suppose to care about (On the flip side, for example, I think Sakura's snub of her was pretty douche as well)

In that case, I think the issue really lies with you rather than with the characters. There's really nothing much I see in either of their behavior that goes beyond teasing, and as Chouji does in fact have a legitimate response to their jabs, I see no reason why he would just smile and take it if he were really hurt by any of it, friends or no. Considering the dynamics of their team, I see it more as that Chouji doesn't care very much, probably out of good nature, but also possibly because he knows Asuma and Ino would still have his back even if they can be jackasses at times.

Ino isn't very nice, that much I can see, but I also see her as a person who will go a friend's aid when they need it, regardless of how she may treat them on a day to day basis. That seems to count for something, at least to me; certainly deserving more than to be considered so gross it's inconceivable that someone would dare ship her with a teammate. And I don't even like the pairing the OP's talking about.

Well, my first response was pretty obviously not super serious, and yes I do respect the fact that when it COUNTS she's there, but I still think it's pretty dick to ride your friends all the time about something like that. And yes, I can relate from when I was younger, but I think that's a lot more a case of noticing something from a different point of view then you might have picked up on.

I mean, you can't seriously think all those nasty comment aren't hurtful, even if he let's them roll off? Chouji's reaction doesn't make it an ok thing to do. If he was not smart and she called him stupid all the time, or if he was ugly and she referred to him as "Putty face" or something, those wouldn't be cool either. And it still shows her as shallow and appearance obsessed. I don't consider someone who picks on their (Super sweet) best friends biggest flaws and digs away at it a super awesome person.

Not very much in this entire thread has indicated to me that you were anything but entirely serious, actually, so you'll have to excuse my reaction. Anyway, disregarding for a moment that the perceived faults of anime characters aren't supposed to be srsbsn, there is a certain set of language that's heavily associated with character basing, especially in this fandom, and in particular in regards to the female cast, which I can't help but take issue with.

It's as though, with certain characters, people insist on ignoring all the good points and zeroing in on a few erring examples, escalating them only to emphasize what were originally reasonably realistic flaws, while at the same time treating other characters as though they can do no wrong. It goes beyond personal preference, and I don't think it's fair. If Ino were depicted as someone who utterly shuns Chouji's company out of derision for his physical appearance, then maybe I can see why the hate is deserved, but as we can see, her superficiality (which, for God's sake, has been used as a plot point, in the Sakura story) doesn't get in the way of their friendship. Perhaps I just don't see Chouji as the kind of person who couldn't stand up for himself in the face of his team's behavior - I think he's above it, because it really doesn't matter that much taken in the perspective of someone who leads the kind of life that these people do.

I understand that, but I disagree that disliking a character for WHO they are is the same as mindlessly bashing them. if I was like "Ino is a stupid bitch, who's ugly and a whore." I would very much conceed your point, but I don't like Ino for WHO she is. It's not an unrealistic character, it's just a character I /don't/ like. and I think, whether you agree or not, I've made some pretty clear, not based in anything but earth logic, or on anything but canon points.

I don't think "We might die tomorrow, so i can be an asshole to you." is cool. And yes, it has been used in canon, but using a character the way they are written....doesn't excuse them being an asshole. Chouji's to nice to say anything. I'm not (For what it's worth!)

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. When it comes down to it, I see Ino as a fundamentally different person from what you perceive. While I acknowledge that she is very focused on appearances, and thus is naturally quick to pinpoint another person's physical lacking (not just with Chouji, but with Sakura as well, i.e, Forehead Girl), she doesn't intentionally use that lacking to make the other person feel less of themselves. Her comments about Chouji and Sakura do not mean that she thinks such physical lackings somehow reflect the people they really are, but at the same time, she cannot help pointing them out, due to her fixation with appearances.

A case in point would be her willingness to stand up to Sakura's bullies, who really were using Sakura's insecurity about her appearance to make her feel like less of a person. Ino seems to me like the kind of friend who can be tactless and unintentionally callous, but whose comments you wouldn't necessarily take to heart because you know know they're not meant to make you feel bad about yourself. But of course, it is understandable if you do not see it that way, or do not like that type of person.

I'm pretty sure that was post time-skip so it'd be a 16 year old girl mocking someone about being fat. But then again, since there's like...nothing redeeming about Ino....it's pretty much a cherry on the fail sundae.
