I didn't make the secret, but you're by far the wisest atheist I have encountered online. Most of them seem to think all Christians are retarded for believing in silly Jesus, and that we all hate gays, and all the things you mentioned... It has really jaded me.

I can't express how much this means that you understand.

I wish more people (including me) would think as openly as you.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but most atheists DO think that way, but don't state it because they don't want to not be taken seriously.

Now who's stereotyping?

There are loud, assholish atheists who think religion is the root of all evil. There are loud, assholish religious people who think atheists/other religions are the root of all evil. There are plenty of people in both categories who can actually respect others' beliefs. Most of the atheists I've known are in the latter group. We'd be idiots to be close friends with the religious people we supposedly look down on as stupid bigots, and yet we are.

Atheists making knee-jerk assumptions about Christians based on their negative experiences = evil.

Christians making knee-jerk assumptions about atheists based on their negative experiences = totally okay.

Never said it was okay.

I never fling anything religiously, so I don't appreciate being flung at by atheists who won't listen to you if you believe in a greater being. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth. When one gets badgered just for having faith, that injustice breeds another, and I have admittedly become quite intolerant myself.
I'm just glad someone finally showed openess and neutrality, even when they don't agree.
Seeing that example, I will better the instruction.
Peace.

You're still a hypocrite. You get justifiably upset when people judge you based on your beliefs, but want permission to judge other people because some atheists were mean to you once. People are mean to atheists all the fucking time. Maybe the reason that these people were so hostile to you was because of their own negative experiences. Did you ever consider that?

And when people say that "intolerance breeds intolerance," they don't mean that bigotry is acceptable as long as the other guy started it. It's not an excuse for bad behavior.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Also, probably many people who are atheists were actually raised Christian, at least nominally so. It surprises me when people say "they think all Christians are like X..." as if Christianity is some obscure religion people aren't really familiar with in a country like, say, America.

The trouble is so many Christians *have* publically tried to link things like homophobia to Christianity and other opinions that it's kind of worked. Even though there are millions of other Christians who don't agree with those things (you can be gay and Christian!). Which is why imo the OP should be open about her Christianity. Show by example how many different types of Christians there are. Unfortunately the loud-mouthed and bigoted people of *every* group are the most noticable.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If I came off as a bigot, I humbly apologize.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, don't worry--sorry. I was just responding in general to all the baggage that goes with everything.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I'm a hypocrite. Did I try to hide it?
It's a bias I keep bottled up, but I admittedly tend to feel negatively toward those who attack religion senselessly. Those are the only atheists I've seen.
I wish I could be more open and tolerant; having seen someone else step above the pretty bias I myself fall into, I actually feel inspired to do so as well.
I'm trying to remedy that hypocrisy. I admit it. I'm a filthy hypocrite, no better than those I judge.
But after seeing someone break down that stereotype, I want to judge less.

I want to be peaceful about this. I really do.
I'm not trying to sound like a holier-than-though jerk, and unintentionally, it seems I am, but I am human, and I'm trying to fix my bigotry, okay?

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Your way of becoming more open-minded is to act like an ass on the internet and then use your good intentions to justify your hypocrisy?

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I'm a flawed, immature person.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-01-10 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
and I'm sorry.
