I am just happy that this Luke is back and not this cranky man who wants to be left alone to die and OOC of Luke like I felt that search for him in TFA was all for nothing.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
saying Luke is out of character in TLJ is like saying Yoda is out of character in Empire. his character changed over time.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a completely wrong take, but there's nothing done with it, especially well, and so it comes across as bad and out of character

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah no, this was not a logical conclusion for Luke's character and was lazy writing. "Oh let's just make the old mentor character a tired bitter man and then kill him off lmao no one's ever done that before!!"

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
anything sounds dumb when you say it in a dumb voice

Yes, seeing Luke again was awesome.

Same here! So glad that Luke is back, albeit briefly. Like a glimmer of hope.

For me, the CGI doubles are always going to look off because I know it's not them, so I don't mind that they ARE off. I was more worried that it wouldn't be Luke than it being a clearly CGI'd Luke.

Maybe I'm in the minority, I guess, but I don't mind when these kinds of effects are clearly effects, especially for the sake of the story they're telling. Grogu works better because he's a puppet.

Not to mention I find the idea of indistinguishable deepfakes to be terrifying just from a real-world implications side, so again, totally fine to me that they're not quite right.

It didn't look that great and yet I didn't really mind that much? Everything about that scene was pure fanservice but tbh I was 100% along for the ride. And I choked up a bit even before I got to Mando having to say goodbye (where the tears fell freely.)

We're still not getting faces right with stuff like this. Tarkin in Rogue One looked dead behind the eyes for example.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind it so much personally, it looked better than the Leia from Rogue One.

I can understand why they didn't use a new actor for young Luke, people would demand a Luke series and then that's all they'd hear about.
This way they can tie up the baby yoda thing and not have to commit to a new Luke actor.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, where would you fit a Luke series into the established canon?

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Money...finds a way.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The end of Return of the Jedi up til Rey finds him being a hermit on the island?

There's years of content there.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
They're still making the Obi-Wan show i think.

A Luke show isn't that farfetched.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
da

Luke spent over a decade after Endor traveling around the galaxy looking for stuff related to the force/Jedi/Sith. Then he took in his nephew and founded a Jedi school that lasted ~13 years.

people have already fancasted Seb Stan if that happens so you're not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I thought it looked as good as when they deep faked Tarkin in Rogue One, yeah sure it was a little uncanny valley but the tech just isn't quite there yet. (And I'm glad they didn't cast another actor, that's basically why I couldn't get into the Han Solo movie: whatshisface isn't Han Solo, Harrison Ford is.)

(Anonymous) 2020-12-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really like any of the CGI fakes I've seen - young Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU was creepy af, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
As long as they keep it to these very short and rare appearances, I don't mind this kind of CGI. It's weird, but I had fun. The only thing I didn't like about this particular case is that Luke tends to be more expressive, and I guess the technology doesn't allow for that yet. Considering the circumstances, a small smile to set everyone at ease would have been nice.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
It was clearly deep faked and I loved every single second of it. Luuuuuuukkkeeeeeee.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder whether it was a 'proper' AI generated deepfake, or regular human made CGI.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The technology is as amazing as it is terrifying. Just pay Sebastian Stan you cowards.

It looks much better in stills though, wow.

(Cozy werewolf anon)

Yeah, this was total fan service for people who were mad about the sequel trilogies. (Am I mad? As a writer, I am annoyed. I have spent 10 minutes with my editor and using their basics have come up with something much more fun that didn't throw legends babies out with the bathwater. But whatever. ((Err... we do this a lot to different franchises.)))

I heard a rumor/saw a vid on youtube they weren't entirely sure if they were going to DO this scene. So, instead of doing a 3D face sculpt like they did with Tarkin, they did the faster deep fake CGI thing. I have seen a pic of young Hammill and a pic of Stan side by side and since Stan is a chameleon he could pull it off. So if they do more Luke in the future, hopefully Stan will be available to do the body work and Hammill can do the voice work.

But we might not get Mando season 3 until late 2021, early 2022, sooo... -plots episodic fanfic-

And I loved it. I loved seeing Luke. Then again, I loved the TLJ Luke, so this to me is just the first step in getting from OT Luke to ST Luke, and I'm all for it.
