Sure, but I think it wasn't until they actually find the ships we see the actual tech. Until then, it's just an inkling one of the sparkles in the sky might be a satellite. (I'm going by original publishing order btw.)

But we were discussing whether Pern was steampunk, and thus the actual tech in the stories.

It's not really renaissance either, it's a sci-fi regression setting, which in many ways is worse than honest renaissance speculative fiction.
