Probably true to most things, but I remember that when Venom came out the "girls are in Venom" "people ship venom/ed!" made news at the time.

I'm not trying to be snide here, but... so what? The fact that it "made the news" suggests that people thought it unusual. That doesn't mean the creators were aware of it during production, or that they made the film with the goal of appealing to slash fangirls. Fandom looks big, when you're in fandom. But they're a minority compared to the general viewership of any given movie.
