WW1984

I really liked it, but I guess the consensus is that it's terrible. Anyone else seen it?

Except for a few parts, I really enjoyed it. My friends all hated it though.

I had a blast watching it, but thinking about it a few days later I have complaints. (Although I was writing in my journal while watching, and I guess I did write, "Oh no, is this about to get racist?" at a certain point, so. I guess I wasn't entirely blind about it in the moment either.)

Specifically though, I adore how they handled the Invisible Jet. I hadn't read any spoilers or watched the final trailer, so I did not see it coming and I had to pause the video to squee when it happened.

I saw and enjoyed the first one, but I never saw the next 1,982, so I haven’t seen this one yet as I probably wouldn’t understand it.

...I think I love you.

I enjoyed it, but unlike WW I don't think I'd watch it again. Not because it was bad, but because the plot was so very specific that I didn't get a feeling of rewatchability from it (if that makes sense).

I think it was beautifully shot and I definitely cried at more than a few parts so I don't know why people would think it's terrible? But then again, my BFF says I am notorious for having the worst taste in media ever lol.

The lead actors are good and put a lot of energy into their roles.

The action scenes are vibrant and fun to look at (a bit cartoony.)

The antagonists mostly made me feel very sad for them, instead of enjoying them losing. I dunno. I think we were supposed to empathise with them but I just empathised a bit hard.

There is no lesbian love affair.

SPOILER

The 'message' about materialism etc. etc. becomes a problem for me around the time everyone in the world gets a wish. Because not everyone would be making wishes out of disgruntlement or greed, some of them would be wishing for the cure for AIDS or for their child to not die, and ignoring that in favour of telling people to not 'take shortcuts' just got very dissonant for me.

It feels like the movie as a whole was aimed at the lower middle class seeking upwards mobility and, eh. I've had too many years of scraping along feeling a bit desperate to feel like the story really 'gets me'.

Gal Gadot is very, very hot.

Specifically to your "materialism" point, the Watsonian explanation is that since the movie MacGuffin's true purpose was not to grant wishes but to sow chaos and destroy civilizations, even the most selfless of wishes would still be cosmically twisted to produce bad outcomes.

I am aware of this Watsonian explanation.

But if the story has to twist people's intentions that far, then it sharply undercuts the "you can choose" message.

The whole thing just felt like the writers had a very limited view of the world. I can't agree with their perspective, so I can't agree with their final moral.

We actually saw it deal with a non-material, non-exploitable wish. It didn't - Lord's son's wish for his father to come home was straight up ignored by the Dreamstone. (Similar to Lord, when he was still dealing with people one-on-one, pushing them towards wishes he could use.)

The 'don't take shortcuts' thing doesn't gel with altruistic wishes because it isn't supposed to. Wish-granting was a front for exploiting people's selfish desires to sow chaos, not the actual purpose of the Dreamstone.

You make a very good point. Thank you.
