I only ever edited one fic for my personal enjoyment--it was a great story, but the author had the unfortune habit of 'mixing it up' by using "the girl" or "the brown haired girl" instead of the character's name in the prose. Like using her name wasn't enough ~variety or something. The version on my computer reads much better now.

Oh yeah, I've done this to remove epithets as well. I've also don't it to replace "cum" with "come," to fix accidental tense shifts, and once, to add double-spaced paragraph breaks to a (relatively short) fic that was missing them.
