I think having a (good) beta makes my fic better, though honestly I mostly use a beta for spelling and grammar. My spelling and grammar are good -- I have worked as a professional editor myself -- but I always miss something. Obviously, if something doesn't make sense or the ending is kind of flat, they tell me!

If you need a beta, tell them what you want; they need to know if you just want cleanup work like that or more intensive help. A good beta will make suggestions that don't make you feel like you suck as a writer.
