Oh man, I love a sad, whumped character, especially if they’re known for being prickly, stoic, and repressed in canon. And H/C that’s heavy on the hurt is gourmet shit in my book.

That said, I do like it to be…within the ballpark of “in character”? Like, I do not give a shit if it’s a ways off from the canon characterization. 99% of fanfic is, and imo it’s often better for it. The canon characterization is just a template, in my books. A helpful rough draft. Something tall for fanfic writers to stand on the shoulders of.

But I still need to feel like the character retains the basic kernel of themselves.

So like, a stoic, badass character who gets whumped and has a lot of internal pain and secretly feels insecure and vulnerable and worthless? LOVE it. But a stoic, badass character who is suddenly acting like a helpless, hysterical five-year-old, who cries at the drop of a hat, and who can’t defend themselves or look after themselves or handle any sort of challenge? Hard pass.

That said, even if what you like is the latter type of woobified character, that’s still totally fine and very much a you do you kind of thing.
