Definitely repurposing inanimate objects is the same thing as "fixing" someone's creative work that they graciously made public to make it suit your personal taste. But the point is that people here aren't doing it in the privacy of their own homes. They're making anonymous comments about how people who might find this practice offensive are clearly just butt-hurt bad writers. No one's stopping you from doing it, but you don't have to be dickish assholes about it too.

It’s pretty snobbish of you to assume that no less creativity or care went into designing and crafting a silk dress or a braided rug or a Chrysler than into a fan fiction. Are you sure you aren’t butthurt about what the anonymous people say they do with the anonymous fan fiction that they downloaded for their own purposes? Because you sound pretty butthurt. And snobby. And crazy, since in your world fan fiction is apparently animate.

I don't post anonymous comments in forums for the people who actually make those things talking about how crappy dressmakers or rugmakers or carmakers are, and how I have to fix their work to make it "better".

Is that what the fanfics told you to say?
