DA - Not saying this in a condescending way, but, you must not follow a lot of youtube content creators. Because parasocial relationships are usually a pretty huge aspect of being a youtube content creator. The ability to encourage mild, non-toxic parasocial relationships with viewers is a big part of what makes a lot of youtubers successful.

I follow zero YouTube content creators except for two, i think, LJ/DW people who make fanvids, if 'watch vid when I notice there is a new one' could be called 'following'.

So, you're right.

When did this 'parasocial' word start being tossed around? I have seriously never heard it once before this thread.

I started seeing it several years ago. According to this ngram (so, analyzing Google books rather than more casual usage online), the word "parasocial" was first used in 1899 and has been in continuous use since 1942, though it's gotten much more common in the past couple of decades.
