Ok so the case was started because Depp was pissed that a newspaper called him a wife beater.
And during the process, Depp used some of the incidents he experienced at the hands of Heard as a way to show that he wasn't a wife beater because she was also volatile towards him.
But at the end of the day, hitting your spouse is wife beating no matter what the circumstances and thus he lost the case.

How does this relate to Amber Heard suddenly being completely innocent?

If the S*n had called her the abuser (and they some papers have btw she's just made the decision to ignore them) and she'd took them to court for libel, she would have also lost the case.
