Please don't tell me you're one of those people who automatically think twink means polite non-aggressive submissive because that's not what that word means.

It means he's skinny and young, like someone said below. Punks can be twinks. Nerds can be twinks. Athletes can be twinks, and most shounen manga boys are.

Ayrt

Oh, I knew I shouldn't have posted when I'm too tired to explain my thoughts properly. Let me try one more time:

No, I don't think twinks are automatically non-aggressive and/or submissive.

A poster below explained the difference between twinks and twunks by using cute for twinks vs. handsome for twunks. That's what I was trying to get at with the cultural context because many of the character's traits, mannerisms and appearance are not considered cute in his culture. It's less "Oh, what a cute guy/punk" and more "cross the street to avoid the scary looking thug".
And scary looking thug does not fit with the definition of twink as I learnt it (back in the early noughties).

I had also another bit typed out but I've deleted it as I'm definitely too tried to properly word it. The gist was, that back when, twink also very much had the undercurrent of meaning white. Something that mostly came up during arguments (between mostly white gay guys, some of which were twinks and defined themselves as such) whether or not cute black guys could be considered twinks.
(Yes, I realize that this most likely stemmed from racism and if the term has honestly come to mean cute guys of all races that would be pretty neat. It's not how I see it used but the (predominately white) country I live in atm is a bit behind in LGBT+ matters.

Though I would still argue that for the character in the secret, the term doesn't apply because his appearance wouldn't be considered cute.)

Twink is a body type that any guy of any race can have.

It's also not culture-based, and if anything it's defined by cute based on a Western lens. The same with other terms like bear, otter, and whatever else. These are Western terms, made to be used while viewing things through a Western lens. What Japanese people would think doesn't matter, since twink isn't their term, it's ours.

If a Japanese person thought an American character fit the "bara" style, would you be like "no, by Western standards this character is not actually comparatively that muscular and therefore..." No! It's their word. It's by their terms.
