164.) EVERYONE has a fandom, they're just not always media related. Fundie Christians have "Christianity" as their fandom. It "fills them" the way media fandom fills us. My brother's fandom is "Being Healthy" which includes working out and eating right and going to the gym and talking and hanging out with people who do the same. There are huge amounts of people who are into "Sports" fandoms, going so far as to pay thousands of dollars for Superbowl tickets and jerseys and whatever, never missing a game. Some people enjoy surfing as their fandom, or knitting or dancing, or drinking or bug collecting. People just don't call them fandom. They're hobbies or interests or, in some lucky cases, jobs. I disovered the world made a lot more sense when I thought about it like this. I could never understand why my brother always wanted to get me to like the things he did. I am fundamentally different--but of COURSE he wants to get me into his "fandom."

What really bothers me is why "Sports" fandom is seen as normal and healthy and possibly envious (I dare you tell someone you've spend thousans of dollars on tickets to the Superbowl) and media fandom is considered unacceptable (tell someone you spent thousands of dollars to go to a Star Trek convention).

Ah well. Fandom is what makes me happy. Sports or whatever is what makes them happy. As the saying goes: Whatever floats your boat (so long as it doesn't sink mine).

Observation of great win.

I had to explain to someone once that a Pagan festival was essentially a con, except outdoors.

This post pretty much sums up everything I would've wanted to say. And extra points for adding this:

THIS. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I ARGUE ABOUT THIS WITH MY SISTER.
I have nothing about professional sports. I mean, I even have a favourite team and I like to keep up with them from time to time. But for some reason, sport fans are rarely ever viewed as "obsessed." It boggles my mind that people won't get looked down on if they spend so much money see every single game their team plays, have a "sports room" and tear their shirts off at each of those games to show their painted stomachs but I would get weird looks if I just told someone I spent one evening at home watching sci-fi shows.
but i ramble, sorry.

It's so true though. I don't do sporty things myself, but I don't begrudge those that do. So why do they begrudge me MY happiness? I cosplay and go to conventions and I assure you all my costumes/hotels/airfare/gas/food/con tickets/merchandise money combined doesn't begin to touch how much one Superbowl ticket/airfare/hotel would cost. And. Just. Yeah. I mean, some people DO think that some sports fans are obsessive. But "Monday night football with the guys" is a staple of American males. So why is "Friday night scifi with my geeks" not acceptable?

Ugh, society.

You win best comment ever. What a wonderful observation. You've kind of changed the way I look at the world.

[identity profile] seapeny.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I could not agree more about the sports thing! I know people who actually think I'm weird (and have laughed at me) for going to see a movie more than twice, or for going to Comic-Con, but wouldn't even blink at someone who's "sports obsessed". It's kinda frustrating. :/

Awesome comment btw!

A+++ comment. A really great observation there.

lmao aren't these all just called "hobbies"?
