(Anonymous) 2009-01-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)In any case, I still think Eastwood's a dick and an ableist. I already had a low opinion of him before reading about this latest fiasco; the thing with Spike Lee is only icing on the dislike cake.

Furthermore, I'll even quote your own article: "Yet almost 900 African-American troops took part in the battle of Iwo Jima, including Sgt McPhatter."
900 troops, out of the 110,000 that took part in the entire invasion (30,000 if we're talking about the first assault wave). That's less then a single percentage point of the entire invasion force (roughly 3% if we assume they were all in the first wave). I'm sorry, but they were very much in the minority (which doesn't take away from their own sacrifices and struggles).
The movie is simply not about the black ammo handlers. Someone wants to make a move about them? More power to them. I'd probably see it, because I'm a history buff.
It's about the marines who stormed Mount Suribachi and planted that flag. The cries of racism are stupid and Spike Lee is a tool anyway, who was just trying to drum up attention for his own movie (which flopped, because it was horrible).
ETA: And, in fact, there are black marines seen in the film, so Spike Lee is talking out of his ass. A wounded black marine is carried away during the initial landing scene and they're seen at briefings regarding the landings.
