When that slash was first used, the word "yaoi" hadn't made it across the Pacific yet, the Internet was still a gleam in the DoD's wizards' eyes, and the original Trekkies - the ones who watched it first-run on broadcast TV - were still reeling in shock that their show had been cancelled. I wasn't born yet, much less you.

Slash is old-school, way older than "yaoi" in the English-speaking fandom. We've been writing man-on-man stories about the Enterprise crew, and the Doctor and his companions, and dozens of other canons, since long before GLBT issues were mainstream in the US. If some of the youngerfen don't know that and are Doing It Wrong, then there's not a lot we grumpyoldfen can do other than repeat the old stories over and over and over. But fandom has a history, and its language has a history.

And yeah, yeah, Y SO SRS? But it's particularly bothering me tonight that so much of the pre-anime fandoms are now seen as interlopers on anime's territory, and described in their terms. Slash pre-dates yaoi in English-speaking fandom, and it seems like most modern fans forget that.

Actually, the first known slash fanfictions was pre any of that. It's was Sherlock Holmes. And yeah, it was before you were born, so you should realize that just as it's stuff YOU had to learn, others could learn it to. Being old doesn't make you any sort of special, get over it. And yes, you are looking very silly taking this so serious (And this is from someone who normally takes fandom pretty seriously. But really. Get worked up over the things that MAKE a difference, there's enough of them). I've been going to the biggest world Sci-fi convention in costumes since I was a wee one and was raised on this shit, and my mom makes you look like a babe in the carriage. Yes, my Doctor is not David Tennat either, and yes, I shipped STtar Trek character before they were played by Zachary Quinton or wtf ever his name is.

Fandom terms are a created language, there is no "Right" or "wrong" way, there is common use. If RPS is commonly being used to describe any relationship of real people, then that's what it means. "Oldfen" used it to mean just homosexual (Although I'm willing to pet if you got a hold of some of those Zines it was used for ALL couples, Spock and Kirk are just the one that MATTERED), "middlefen" used both (And yes, I was clearly speaking of NOT anime fans. When Buffy and X-files were in their prime, Anime meant DBZ, Sailor Moon and a few action movies you could catch at 2 am on Sci-fi), and the "youngerfen" at least in real person are obviously using it for both as well. As the actual / is used any any couple, that would be the closest to correct there is.

Yeah, it'd generally homosexual western based fandom relationships. Just like Yaoi is generally original R or above rated Japaneses manga about homosexuals. But someone switching BL or slash or yaoi or June in and out doesn't make them idiots, and if they get across their point...they have successfully communicated in a world full of coded and made up words.
