Where are YOU where 2-3 million isn't enough to live on for the rest of your life?

San Jose, California. :(

In this hypothetical you could probably buy a house in, like, Santa Cruz and be fine

Boy, there are a lot of assumptions being made about other people's lives and expenses in this entire thread...

Most people are talking in hypotheticals, so not really.

Thread!OP implied that anyone who thinks you can live on that much money for the rest of their life is simply too young to know about the real world, so idk who's making assumptions here

Thread!OP here. You misunderstood me. I asked because I live in an insanely expensive area of a country where houses begin pricing at around one million dollars, and one major illness or accident could easily wipe out a couple million dollars in savings (if one has that to begin with). Someone upthread said 2 million is 50k for the next 40 years, but that will still only take you into your 60s if you're a 20-something, and where I live, even rent starts at over 1k a month. 2-3 million is certainly a lot of money and no doubt liveable in other places. I was just curious.

Houses there start at about 750k, so theoretically it would be possible to buy a house in the 1 million dollar price range, but then you'd have to get a job or pray you never got sick/had a bad accident. Then there's the commute if you don't work in Santa Cruz: you need a car and insurance and you're looking at at least a 45-minute commute one way. Ugh, it's so fucking expensive here.

I mean, it's all on a sliding scale of difficulty. Like... the initial hypothetical started by saying 2 to 3 million dollars. But that difference of a million dollars makes a huge difference in terms of how much of an ability to survive you have - for instance, in this instance, where living on 3 million dollars in Santa Cruz is fundamentally much different than living on 2 million dollars.

But the point I want to make is that, most places in the world, 2-3 million is close to, if not well above, the amount of money where you can probably survive on it for the rest of your life. So scoffing at the idea of someone surviving on 2-3 mil is kind of ridiculous to me, even though it's true that there are some places where it wouldn't be possible.

Lol, right? The difference between 2 and 3 million dollars is... a million dollars.

I'm none of the anons in this thread but I make ~$40k/year and live in San Diego, and up until last year made about $22k/year, but I inherited my house. It's falling down, but at least I don't owe rent. $40k only works in most of coastal California with at least a couple of roommates.
