If I only eat food that I prepare at home and don't own a car and seldom use public transportation and only use the free internet at the library, I could just about make it if I also never get sick and the pipes never break.

If I were also supporting a child, then no.

I think many people in this thread are forgetting about taxes. In NYC, if you make $80k gross that's like $50k net. So if you're getting $50k a year tax-free from your investments, that's like having an $80k salary. A single person can certainly be okay in NYC on an $80k salary. They might not be living it up, but they won't be poor either.

This is crazy to me. I live in Vancouver, which is a pretty expensive place to live, and 25K per year, CAD, is plenty for me to get by on. It's not living large by any means, but it's comfortable. I have savings, even.

Our cost of living is crazy.

50k a year is surviving and for many, barely at that.
