tbhq this is me and only me, but...I'm staunchly anti-RPF because I used to work in the music industry and everything outsider fans assume about celebrities based on how they behave on stage or at a meet n greet is 100000 percent wrong. I've seen them in their native habitat when they don't have to put on a nice face for the media, and their "personas" are nothing more than their customer service faces. most of us know what it's like to have to force a smile when someone is being dumb or rude around us, even if it isn't in a situation where it might cost us a job or something. so, anytime someone comes out with the excuse that they're not writing the person they're writing the persona which is a character and completely fictional, I feel the urge to shake them vigorously. It's not a fictional character, it's this person being polite in public.

AYRT

Hmm. I guess having an insider perspective of those people really makes it feel different. I never worked in the industry or knew anyone famous enough to have RPF written about them, so I'm with the "I ship their characters" crowd. To me what we see is a few minutes of stage acting. Nothing more, nothing less.

NAYRT Even if it's them acting polite, it's still a surface impression of someone. Shallow and meaningless enough to be used in fiction imo without crossing a line. It's when people start acting like their fantasies are real it's a problem.

AYRT

Indeed. And I guess it's difficult to measure that line exactly which is why some people avoid RPF altogether?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT Not really. You're always going to only have a surface impression.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
DA - Sure, but you only have a surface impression of your bank teller or your dental hygienist too. Still creepy to draw porny fan art of them. Unless they ask you to. The consent makes it sexy.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, celebrities are different from Val at the bank.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Why?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because they have public images which they earn big money for and they know it's bound to happen?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
So, because you're on a popular TV show, you give up your right to consensual sexual interaction with strangers? Hot take.

NAYRT

writing porny fic about someone is not a sexual interaction with them

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. Write a porny fic about someone you work with and post it publicly. Then get back to me on how that worked out for you.

Verrrry different scenario. There are no consent issues with RPF.

How do you figure?

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2021-01-06 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You're sounding like those authors who go "I hate fanfic of my characters!" yeah you do you but maybe your place isn't here?

What part of "we don't know them personally we only know their public personae" did you not get though

Most people don’t know everyone at their place of employment personally either. Pick one of them to write about. You can tell HR that you’re just writing about their public persona.

Honestly? If I was HR I'd just ask wtf was wrong with them, but I wouldn't fret if they didn't know eachother. Because they're obviously just fantasizing not invading each other's personal spaces. Jesus.
