The reason I said pulp fiction writers on 'Zon is because at four books a year, at least, even if they're 40K each, all you're going to be doing is writing. It becomes your job. So, they're putting out 160K words a year, which is a longer novel like Gaiman writes, but in much smaller, much less edited chunks. And the life cycle of their books is going to be much shorter. And they're going to have a big back list in a much shorter time than NG.

So, some scam the system by taking those books down, selling them to other authors and letting them republish them with a new and yet similar name/cover under the other author name and make more money off them again. Not illegal but definitely morally grey.

Some pulp fiction writers are pulling in 5 figures, some are pulling in 6, and Amazon notices and sponsors them and makes it that much harder for everyone else by tailoring the algorithms to those who have made modern pulp fiction their job. I'm not saying even there are more than a couple dozen of them. It just they happen to exist. They are the unicorns of the indie world like authors like King, Roberts, and to a smaller extent, Gaiman, are the unicorns of the trad publishing world.

If you look at any self-publishing guides/forums on reddit, it's illuminating.

Personally, I'd rather put out one book a year, 2 if I can manage it. So, no, I couldn't quit my day job and expect to be a successful indie author on the 'Zon.
