You're misinformed. Common people in Japan don't think anime is weird at all. But they do think that a) obsessive people are weird (as everyone should), b) there is weird anime. Just like there's perfectly "normal" anime such as Doraemon or Gintama or Kimetsu no Yaiba there's also weird tentacle rape porn number 1928.

I don't find Teletubbies weird per se but I don't think Teletubbies would be very relevant of stuff made for adults and teens

LMAO this. I taught elementary and junior high school in Japan, and it was normal for students and teachers to have anime goods pinned and hanging all over their school supplies (and school supplies that were anime goods themselves). Kids draw anime fanart to make PSA posters in their schools. There are anime-themed study guides. You can't get away from it.
