Rule one of being a good beta is that you ask the author what they want a beta for. If all they want is SpAG? Alright, that's all you do. If there's obvious Brit/Yankpicking issues then you bring those up too, but not everyone is open to actual content editing.

Set expectations at the beginning, and it's a lot less frustrating for all parties.
