Y'all Betas, Commiserate

What's the least controversial thing you ever tried to edit that got shot down by an author?

For me, it was trying to convince an SPN author that Dean and Sam would never refer to their mother as 'Mum' or tell anyone to get anything out of the boot of the Impala.

Lmaooo

I wish I could find an AU where Dean & Sam were Brits or Aussies. I would crack up. Especially if it was some kind of crack fic taken seriously where a Gabrielesque charade goes down and suddenly instead if the CW, SPN is a BBC property, and everyone they know has been replaced and it all takes place near Wales or something and the boys are like "WHY DO WE HSVE ACCENTS Wtf"

Sorry,I have nothing to add beyond that, although my betaing has been limited!

AYRT - there are some fandoms where the accent issues would be OOC, but easy enough to ignore. SPN is not one of those fandoms.

SA - Also, I am there for that crackfic.

Ha! Bonus points for the boys trying to pronounce Welsh place names!

There's a salt'n'burn in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Dean.

Somebody I beta'd for many moons ago was convinced that toast was spelled "tost". The fic was a domestic oneshot where the characters were making each other breakfast and the author insisted that they made "tosted" bread. I have no idea what the heck that was about.

"Tost." That is hilarious. And with the entire internet at their disposal.

Okay as a Brit, that's just annoying. If you're writing an American fandom and you're lucky enough to have an American beta who can Ameripick for you, then bloody listen to them! Yeesh.

I haven't done much beta work because my own writing isn't up to scratch. Not sure I could be diplomatic in situations like that.

The author was absolutely convinced that wonder and wander were actually the same word with regional spelling variance, and that my attempts to correct the multiple instances of their characters wondering around the countryside were proof that they should never have accepted a "British" (I'm Canadian) beta.

Linking them to the dictionary definitions as a last-ditch "no, really, they're completely different words" didn't help. They posted the fic with all the wondering around intact. To this day, I'm not sure if they still believe wonder and wander are the same word, or if they finally did realize their mistake, but dug their heels in out of embarrassment.
