The part where you're talking about a beta not understanding your vision of the characters or story confuses me because if you're participating in a fic exchange you're creating a gift for someone else...so you're trying to write your recipients vision of the characters and story so that they'll enjoy their gift.

Clearly if their recipient doesn't enjoy OP's brilliant vision of the characters and story, it's because the recipient is a worthless peon who just can't fathom OP's genius and doesn't deserve nice things.

+1

If you're writing a gift fic for someone, your priority is to write something your reader will enjoy. Period. That is your top priority. So if you know your recipient's identity (which doesn't happen in all exchanges, some are double-blind), you should kind of stalk their fics and their recs to see the characterizations they enjoy most. If you can't do that, then a beta will help you stick close to canon at least. Canon is your best bet.

Exchanges are not the place for your ~unique vision~. Exchanges are the place to make a gift that someone else will enjoy.

Of course you can write your unique vision and post it anywhere at any time you like, without a beta, at will.

NOT in an exchange though.
