What is this thing where fandoms pick the most aggressively het male characters and argue how they're canon bi despite all very clear evidence to the contrary.

I could even argue how all these characters picked feed into bisexual stereotypes as they're all massive man-sluts, but even I think that's reaching a little. But it's there in the back of my head every time.

generally the thought is aggressively hetero = overcompensating for something, and frankly, considering a lot of things that happened in canon, i can see why people think that way, though i doubt it was intentional, because the fans have consistently put more thought and heart into the show than the writers ever did. that could be said about most things involving supernatural though, having interesting characters and occasionally stumbling into interesting ideas by accident so the fans project more meaning onto things.

“Generally the thought is aggressively hetero = overcompensating for something.”

Got it in one.

they just don't seem to understand that "canon" doesn't mean "I really want this to be true but there's absolutely no evidence for it"

I feel as if secret bi status could be argued for Dean. There is nothing like this for Sam.

I had an aggressively "hetero" friend (talked incessantly about hot girls and wanting to fuck them, was sad when no gf) who came out as bi. I get that fiction =/= real life, but to suggest that an aggressively "hetero" person could never turn out to be bi is not what we want to be going for here.
