Obviously not the fucking point. Of course there's a difference, but when the difference is die free but starving in a hedge, I don't think there's that much in it.

While I think there were some very significant differences, beyond simply the principle of the thing, I also don't entirely disagree with you. The number of servants who were abused physically and sexually is certainly a testament to how little power to leave they often had. Having a choice technically, is not the same thing as having a viable choice.
