Re: Which decade do you think put out the best or worst movies?

Worst is the 1960s. I think that's just clear (discounting the 2010s which are too recent to judge).

Best is much harder to determine, and I could see a strong argument for the 30s, 40s, or 70s. But if you asked me my personal favorite, I would say the decade 1985-1995.

there were a lot of 60's movies I love but there were some terrible ones too. As well as some movies that did NOT age well.

Yeah, I think every decade has great movies, but the 60s just had relatively few, and a lot of misses.

I think because - in the US specifically - it was a generational gap, after the classical period of Hollywood and the studio system etc had basically ended, but before the New Hollywood generation of the 70s.

I wouldn't say the 30s and 40s were particularly great as a whole considering the shitload of awful world-war-time propaganda movies that came out.

Eh. There are worse messages for movies than "Nazis Bad."

DA

Nazis bad wasn't the only message. A whole lot of hugely racist anti-Japanese and even generally anti-Asian movies came out too.

Definitely not unique to the 40s.

I mean, have you seen Rising Sun?

Every decade has a ton of bad movies. On the other hand, you have EG Citizen Kane. Also pretty much all screwball comedy and classic noir. And Charlie Chaplin's best work and WC Fields and Jean Renoir and Fritz Lang and Preston Sturges and Hitchcock's and John Ford's early work and The Bicycle Thief and Casablanca and Cary Grant and Fred Astair and Powell and Pressburger

(That said, I thought about it more and I definitely think the 50s are actually the best decade for film overall)
