#145: I can only ever see Tom Cruise in any film he's in. As if his Tom Cruiseness overwhelms any character he's trying to play. OHI IM TOMCRUISE AND I'M IN THIS MOVIE. It's not that it's the recent scandals or anything, it's just that it's TOM CRUISE, THE FAMOUS ACTOR. He can no longer disappear into his roles for me. Oh well.

#161: SUPRISE SALLY JUPITER! But seriously, I used to feel way self conscious when I was watching R-rated movies (especially in front of my parents, even if it was on cable) as a preteen.

I would have said that I'm the same way (along with a few other actors) until I saw him in Tropic Thunder. I never even knew he was in the movie, and when the credits rolled around I was all "WHAT"

it must've been the glued-on chesthair or something, I dunno.

I know what you mean -- I feel the same way. It's not that he's every bad, it's just that he's always the same person. (I don't count his role in Tropic Thunder, but also, I think it's telling that it took all that make-up and latex to become a different person.)

In fact, I think that movie relied on his Tom Cruiseness as a way to indicate heroism without having to actually spend time on character development. Like, they knew the audience would see his face and just fill in the typical Cruise character backstory -- honorable, fights for justice, is a good guy, etc. etc. etc. -- and all they needed to do was stick in a couple of lines about, oh, he never liked Hitler and believes in Germany, and *poof* we'd get it.

Compare him with Bill Nighy in that movie....Bill Nighy didn't even have to open his mouth, but just from the way he moved his body and held eye-contact in the very first scene, you instantly got a picture of who that character was. Who was nothing like the other characters I've seen him play.

Wow, I...didn't know I had so much to say about Tom Cruise! o.O

Yeah, that's what separates an actor from a "Designated Hollywood Leading Man" in my opinion. Hollywood spends too much time promoting the latter, and not enough on the former in my opinion.

145. I'm like this with so many actors. Basically, if they're in magazines all the time, I can't picture them as anything but themselves. I can deal with them if they're doing cartoon voices, though.

Val Kilmer and Nicolas Cage are like that for me, too. If they're continually billed as the HOLLYWOOD LEADING MAN and nothing is done to alter their looks, it just becomes TOM CRUISE/NICHOLAS CAGE/VAL KILMER instead of whatever role they're trying to portray.

I laughed so hard at that. From now on I will hear that whenever I watch him in any movie. xD
