Are you an artist? Because if you spent ten hours drawing something, then you'd probably want other folks to do you the courtesy of crediting you when they take that ten hours of work and make it into an icon. Because that's what it is, you know? A courtesy. Is there some problem with being polite?

I've never heard of someone asking people to donate money in exchange for the right to make icons...is that even what you're talking about? If you're just complaining about fanartists being financially compensated as a general principle, that's a whole other issue that has absolutely nothing to do with icon credits.

I am one and I occasionally see icons of my fanart.
It's flattering and encouraging, regardless if they've given credit or not...might be a personal thing, but I honestly don't care.

I'm glad that it doesn't bother you, because we all have enough stress in our lives as it is. But do you think that the fact that YOU aren't bothered means that no one should be?

It's okay to ask for credit, it's their right. But going on a rampage and acting like a bitch isn't. Oh well, both sides should learn to behave...fandom really likes to blow things out of proportion.

I'd say he/she is butthurt that their favourite artist only does commissions rather than doing free art.

Hmmmm, commissions are the only way some of us get to see fanart of our OTPs because its a minor ship in a fandom that isn't the biggest around.

When I get around to uploading fanart the only time I'd get shitty about someone using it without permission would be if they took fanart of my OTP and used the fanart to bash the pairing in question

I doubt the OP is "butthurt". Rather I think he/she is commenting on how hypocritical it is of an artist to profit off of somebody else's work (which is what fanartist who accept commissions or sell prints are doing, as they aren't using their own character designs) and then immediately turn around and whine about the fact somebody else then altered it for amusement and not even profit.

If drawing fanart and selling it is a compliment to the original creator, then making that fanart into an icon is a compliment to the fanartist.

Except that, because of Japanese/American publishing cultural differences, Japanese mangaka are generally fine with their character designs being used for fanworks, whereas the fanartists that get their art stolen EXPLICITY SAY not to take them.

Also, taking someone's IDEA and putting in time and effort to create a drawing is NOT the same as taking someone else's WORK and cropping it into a 100x100 square for your own promotion.

Taking someone's idea to create a drawing is still stealing, last time I checked. Fanart is illegal, if you want to get technical with copyright law. ESPECIALLY the fanart that is sold for PROFIT. Why people get butthurt over some random internet person making their fanart into an icon when technically, their fanart is illegal to begin with boggles my mind. BOGGLES!

YESSSSSSSS. I'm a crappy artist myself, but especially with Orphan Works looking like it might actually PASS, I'm feeling a bit paranoid about my stuff going through the internet, and I'd be surprised if professional artists weren't.

On the money point, I think the OP might be referencing how some artists sell prints of their fanart, especially at cons.
