143. My freshman year of high school, I saw Denzel Washington in Julius Caesar. I stood in line for an hour to meet him, and when I got to the front of the line I was so worried he'd be unimpressed with me that I had to be prodded by my dad to go shake his hand. Denzel was so incredibly gracious and considerate about it that, though I am still ferociously embarassed if I get my freaking pizza order wrong, I get warm fuzzies whenever I think of that moment. In short: if you're not a screaming entitled fangirl idiot, I'm pretty sure he was impressed with you.
144. RAIMEI! I really love her so much. I've gotten so attached to this show that I'm loathe to join the fandom because of all the inevitable Miharu/Yoite, which will just depress me. Sigh. But your secret gives me hope, I was sure fandom would be all over with the Raimei hate. She's a fantastic character. New fandom and rambly? Noooooo...
147. I so agree. If I could draw fanart, I would do it because I loved it and not out of some sideways sense of entitlement and ego. I make icons because I like making icons and I put them up for free because what the hell am I going to do with a hard drive full of livejournal icons. Art is pointless if other people don't enjoy it. If you want to charge, that's your perogative, but take commissions or set up a table at a convention, don't be so freaking passive-aggressive.

And no, I've never met ANYONE who dislikes Raimei, let alone hates her. Basically everyone thinks she's awesome ~~as they rightly should~~. And don't be afraid to be depressed! We all are, so there's plenty of support. ;p And... Erased=/=gone. There's always hope. :)

This icon's getting a lot of love today :D I swear, the instant I met Raimei I thought "oh, powerful female character, fandom's gonna hate her" but it's so encouraging to hear that's not the case. Maybe I should be less judgemental about fandommers.

Don't be afraid! NnO's fandom is really sweet. Yeah, there's some Miharu/Yoite battleshippers... Myself included I suppose, but I understand if it's not people's thing.

I did really, really appreciate the support for not only Raimei, who I adore, But Hanabusa as well! Especially Hana, since she's the sort of motherly, housewife type that often get panned in fandom.

The thing I love about Nabari is, is that while I love the Yoite and Miharu dynamic, I really adore the entire cast. I really care about each of the characters, and want all of them desperately to have some kind of happiness in the end. ;O;

I have never heard of ANYONE asking people to PAY for the right to make icons for their art -- I think the OP was clumsily conflating two unrelated issues into one weird secret.

In any case. It isn't ego-centric or entitled to want your name attached to your work. And honestly, it's not just a courtesy to the artist, it's a courtesy to the community in general -- if someone wants to investigate the work of an artist they see in an icon, how else are they going to know who drew it?

I seriously don't get where all this "OMG BEING POLITE AND COURTEOUS TO FANARTIST SUCKS!" nonsense is coming from.

Being a fanartists myself this is getting fucking ridiculous. I don't have to draw fanart, I choose to share my talent to everyone and in return I merely ask for everyone to simply CREDIT ME. It's not out of ego, it's out of the work I put into it. It's still my drawing. It's still my work.

It isn't that hard to ask permission, to credit or link back to an artist for fuck's sake.

Yeah, but the secret was about people who charge for the use of their fanart, not about people who ask for credit. I'd be upset if someone didn't credit my icons, and rightly so, and I wouldn't use someone else's fanart in an icon without giving them credit for the same reason, but I'm not gonna charge LJers to use my icons. If I saw someone asking for donations on their fanart site in the same setting/post/paragraph as asking for permission, it'd come across to me as passive agressively asking to be paid to use their art, which would be kind of bitchy. I haven't seen this myself, but I don't use other people's art in icons-- but I agree with the secret maker that if I did see this it would strike me the wrong way.

I didn't write the secret but I know what the person is talking about. The thing is, the owner of the fanart used for the secret is the kind of artist that tells you you can't use fanart icons in the artist's community if they don't have the permission to use the images, even if the arts haven't even been made by her.

Also, and you can check this in the VK communities (don't know if the artist is still doing it or not) the artist's been doing some scanlations, and then posts them and then "nicely" asking for donations to keep the site up.

Call me picky, but you shouldn't ask for donations unless you have a site that's entirely for other people. Fansubs and scanlations groups do; but hey! all the material is for the fans.

In this case, it's fanart which cannot be used unless you have the artist's permission, and who will make you through thin anc thick just to get it, and then, loves to bash other people and acuse of art theft. Plus, the artist's got followers that come to you and insult you.

When that happened to some friends of mine, I got pissed off.

So, I don't think it's actually been about the permission per sei, but about the profit some fanartist made out of their work. Some people are more skilled and they are nice enough to tell you their conditions for using their fanart and some even tell you, "just go ahead and use them!"

Just think about it...
