Except then you likely need to get .5 lead (which is going to cost about $2) so it doesn't smear and a better mechanical pencil if you're using it all the time (The ones I use with the nice grip and plenty of eraser are $5)

And then I have a pencil sketch which is....eh, pencil sketches don't really toot anyone's horn often, oh hey, I can't share on the internet cause I haven't bought a scanner.

And suddenly it's $150. Plus your $9 bucks.

I'm not saying anyone HAS to donate or that artist should expect it (I sell my art and am flabbergasted when someone tips) but it's also not like this is a cheap hobby, and having the little paypal thing isn't like a BFD. YOu know, SOME pro-artist charge for you to see their gallery, period. I don't agree with that but hey, makes a little pay pal look harmless.

Yeah I CAN doddle with a ball point pen on a napkin at Denny's but really, that NOT what you (or at least most people) want from a fan artist. You have to pay money to get worth while supplies, and yeah...people know the difference, and acting like they don't is simple naivety.

Wacom tablet can easily cost into the hundreds though.

Let's be honest: the good fanart that usually that is sold? That artist paid for a wacom tablet or used those capcom markers that are expensive.

Seriously. I don't understand this backlash against fanartists lately.

I think you have a huge misconception about artists that do put a pricetag on their doujinshi. The pricetag covers the costs to make the doujinshi/comic then a little bit of profit. Usually, if I'm not mistake, the person who buys the comic is just paying for the cost to print it out and the work that the artist had to put into it.

It's like your making it out that these artists are making BANK profit on these comics, and that's not true.

Some people don't like using used products because it doesn't have a warranty and the like.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, me and my group paid $40 to start our group, and we have done NOTHING but sell reasonably priced shit since. We cut discounts for kids who sincerely want shit, NOTHING at our both that isn't custom made for the client is above $10, and none of us have taken home ONE CENT to put in our pockets. I repeat I have made NO profit off other people's art, not a cent. All of it has gone straight back into productions (And we often work in the red)

Yes, the $10 we charge is not the cost of making the prints alone for the doujinshi (A 20 page doujinshi, minus original supplies and time and effort comes in at about $4).

It's the cost of the table ($100 bucks usually), the displays, the money we need to get to the con (Often across country, and often paying a bunch out of our pockets anyway even for con's were ONLY working, not playing at, because we keep our prices low enough that we're not ripping people off. We have yet to pay anything from company funds for a con that is even partially for fun, only if we stay at the table all con), the cost of the business cards, etc etc etc,

The price of my makers? Aren't part of what we charge people. Because I use those for my classes and personal art, and we keep business and personal separate.

I looked at your comic. It's cool. It's also black and white, and all online which knocks out so much over head price it's not even funny. I've worked on a comic like that, and yeah I was able to do it REALLY cheap cause I just bought a cheap sketch book and used ball point pens and it worked for THAT. But it also was FAR lower quality, not in style but in the technical aspects. Your art style (Which don't get me wrong, I like a lot) is very flat and simple, and the supplies and methods you use would NOT work for the art I do, which is very heavy in color layering and details (Well, mine not so much the details) Your art would look weird in oils or chalk pastels or what have you (And honestly, you luck out that way. When one artist in our group tries to color that way instead of coming across as clean and simple is comes across as plain and lazy)

You are, in styles, comparing how you grown apples to my orange orchard. I need different tools then you do because I do different things then you do, and my tools end up costing a lot.

I use a thrice hand me down tablet so old you can't see thought the plastic cover anymore with a stylus held together with tape. I was using a hand me down laptop, but had to upgrade because it ran so slow I couldn't use PS on it (Sorry, bottom line doesn't work for art there) and as for scanner, I had to buy a nice one, because the cheap ones just effed up the colors (And yes, I did LOTS of research. Like I said, I don't have money to be wasting on this)

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
A set of Prisma's 72 ($303, tho I think I got them half priced), a set of Copics 72 (Which list at $467 but I sure didn't pay that for em...and as those are made for manga and are sorta the standered in manga art, it's not like an out there things to buy), and random other ones I've added as I've gone. Some deleters, some Tria's, and some cheaper ones that I've found work.

These are kind of the industry standard to use, and what you'll find most graphic and comic book artist use. Even in your example, you also forgot a tablet, and a computer that runs well enough to USE photoshop. Even at a one time cost, that stuff can set a poor college student out.

No you don't NEED it, a pencil sketch can be a beautiful piece of art, but good art supplies cost what they're worth. Sorry. or example, working with markers, I can't use computer paper (It's far to light a stock, even for my normal drawing and bleeds odd) So if I didn't shell out the money for Bristol I'd be ripping my customers off. Trust me, I'm poor, I work at minimum capacity (That maker collection took me 4+ years to build up, and everyone one of them gets used till they little more then pale streaks.Part of the reason I'm forcing myself to learn photoshop is to cut down on marker prices)

I'm not saying that you don't have an awesome set up for you but you're kidding yourself if you think that art isn't often validly expensive.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
They are expensive because they are better quality. Trust me, there is a difference between using Crayola color pencils and Primsacolor pencils, computer paper and Bristol paper. Trust me, it shows.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, every professional I know has them (In fact Clamp's set made me wanna cry), and most of my advance level classes require them to some extent (As well as those of most student I know at other schools) And shit, they're SO much cheaper then say, using oils or airbrushing.

And yes, there are forms of art that don't need them, but if say, you don't you know, USE computers or like the feel that gives to art...your style works for you. It doesn't work for everyone, and really most artist I know even who DO use just computers use at least bristol board for their originals.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
And shit, they're SO much cheaper then say, using oils or airbrushing.

*sob* They are, they are. A small tube (like the size of a travel-size toothpaste tube) of cadmium red can easily go in the $20 range. Ugh, I prolly spent close to $80-90 on oils and these oils were discounted. And they weren't even professional grade, christ.

Oh art classes in college, how you bankrupted me.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry. I have been avoiding painting class for that EXACT reason. (And oooooh I know I'll fall in love with the medium too DDDD:)

I used Basic Arcylics in my color theroy class. My teacher was like "The Syllabus said not to buy those you know." and I was like "Sucks huh?" (She was cool and just sorta shook her finger at me....but oh man the quality drop huuuurt)

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, because if you're in comics the line between "fanartist" and "professional" blurs a lot? I use the same supplies for my personal works as I do my fan art work (And my fan art got me my pro-jobs so if I hadn't I'd have been fuuuucked) and most manga-ka started out do doujinshi? And let's face it, working for Marvel or DC is being a pro fanartist (Unless they give you the ok to do your own thing)

Count yourself a lucky one XD Seriously, if it works for you, work with it. Like I said above, I checked your art and it's working for you.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
It helps, but how I got my job was to go to Arizona comic con (And comic cons help because they're a lot more professionally oriented, as oppose to fan oriented) and showed my portfolio off to everyone who even VAGUELY had anything to do with, got critiques from all of them (And all except the bitch at yaoi press were really good ones...not all really positive so you GOTTA have a thick skin, especially if you're anime oriented)

And makes sure to take some pin ups, but also some of your strips, and if you're interested in doing it, several sequential pages (I made a friends drabble into a short doujin)

Also, if you're interested in doing a strip, you should check local papers, and possibly even pitch it to nationwide syndicate...the worst they can say is no.
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah and comic cons generally are more. And rarer. (And you can send stuff in, but....it's a lot more effective to be like "O HAI I'M IN YOUR FACE LOOK AT MEEEEE")

Portfolio is easy tho. Pick like...your five best strips, 3 pages of sequential art, 5-10 pin ups, and any tradtional art you can, so you can say "Yes, this is what I draw, but it's not ALL I can draw."

If you print them out, you can get cheap protfolios that are slick and nice at www.dickblick.com (The best brad IMO is like...Ioyta? Or close to that) but like...I jut took around my laptop with a file with just those things to browse through.
