In the last volume of the manga, Sasahara goes to Yabusaki to try to understand why she's pushing herself so hard to improve the manga she's working on and why she becomes very frustrated and touchy over his critique on prompt, and you get a better understanding of why she pushes herself so hard to get things done the right way. She's gone through a life that ended up with an array of mistakes and occurences that she wished had never happened, and I believe that because of that, she's trying all she can to never have to go through anything like that. She wants things to go the way she wants them to and she wants to show others how she can move on and become stronger, become better. I also think that she engrosses herself so much in things because it's a distractor to her, though at times not a very effective one.
I don't believe she -tries- to come out as the way you see her. I just don't think she has any other way of reacting to things that she believes could get out of her control, which she doesn't want happening again. She just tries far too hard, and doesn't know when to let up.
