So basically, as long as it's a compliment, it's fine? I like the food you cook, you should let me eat it for free! I like the look of your new car, why not lend it to me every other week -- I'm paying you a compliment, after all, you've got such good taste! I like your writing, so I'm going to use parts of it in MY written work as well. Hooray, you should be flattered! It means that your writing is that good, people will use it in THEIR writing too! Woohoo!

I honestly think it would come off as a compliment a lot more if the person making the icons could just exercise some common courtesy and ask the artist, or at least give credit. Why can't you make just that little bit of effort to respect the artist's wishes? Oh sure, you're paying them a compliment! You like what they do, therefore it entitles YOU to do anything YOU like with it.

Really, I think the artist would be a lot more flattered if people cared to ask. It shows that you think their art is good, AND that you respect them enough to ask one small question.

IAWTC. How hard is it to ASK? I think most of the time, they'll say yes if you take the extra few seconds to do that and maybe give credit. It's usually not that hard.

I actually do, thank you. I just never understood why artists get so mad when they are actually doing the same thing with another artist's work. Should they go ask the original artist before using? A lot of companies when advertising have to do so, why not fanartists?

But I do agree with you. It would be seen more as a compliment if credit were possible, but like the secret said, if the artist is making you jump through hoops to do so, that is making the artist look like an elitist prick.

Actually, I wish my crappy writing would be MSTed without my permission! I'd love to see even my good writing put on sites, even if I'm not listed as the author. Though I generally think that's wrong for anyone else, I'd like to see my stuff posted anywhere, because I know I did it, so just the fact that I know is good enough for me. It's the internet, after all... everyone is initially anonymous.

But yes, asking is a good thing to do. And thank you for explaining the beef that some artists have.

Another anon here, asking because she's curious. Does this mean you're against the doujinshi market, too?

a little. I'm not going to lie, I do buy them, but I've seen some of the doujinka get in trouble and what not, because some mangaka(or whatever?) do take it personally(I think the Sailor Moon creator did? I don't know)

But it's basically a vicious cycle.
