I think it can be done well, but it requires working within the canon characterization and not just slapping a famous name on your OC.

Except the OP of the secret is objecting to this practice for characters that are not clearly defined as such. And in my experience, it also is done regularly for characters who are in fact explicitly portrayed as not whatever identity the author relates to or wants to be writing about. So the odds of them "working within the canon characterization" are not great.

I'm not saying that authors can't explore or that fic with these types of approaches are always bad. But there is certainly a trend or correlation, especially when the author, uh, "waxes poetic" about their headcanons in the tags/summaries.
