I agree that it's broadly harmless whichever way you do react

But that goes both ways. If peoples' reaction is not to take OP at face value, that's also harmless. So then how do you justify the comments that are like "UGH I guess some people just think they're so smart and clever!! What do you want, hard documentary evidence?? Sounds like a bunch of salty fanfic writers to me!!"?
