I remember Scott Weinger sharing a tweet after his death that featured the Genie and said something like, "Genie, you're free". That really got to me.

I was so saddened by his death, too. He was such a big part of my childhood-not just the Genie, but there was also his role as Batty in Ferngully, and I remember watching the reruns of "Mork & Mindy" on Nick at Nite all the time as well. Add in the way he died as well and that just makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Dammit, who let the onion cutting ninjas in here again?!

What Dreams May Come gets me every time. And we constantly quote Batty from Fern Gully.

I think it helps keep his memory alive for us.

I wish it wasn’t like it’s seen as weird to be affected, in the immediate aftermath especially, so greatly by the passing of a celebrity you really like. Emotions often aren’t rational, including when nostalgia is involved.

He died the day after we got back from our Honeymoon and the now defunct (on TV anyway) BBC Three showed the Family Guy episode where everything Peter touches turns into him moments before the news broke. So needless to say, as well as shedding a couple of tears the added mindfuck compounded my jetlag. Even if I had been able to, I didn’t feel like sleeping that night.

I don't think it's weird, especially when the celebrity is so well loved and part of our childhoods and brought joy to so many. In Robin Williams' case it was all so tragic too. That he had made so many laugh, and all along he felt utterly alone even when surrounded by people... :(

If it’s of any comfort, I don’t think he did. He gave his wife a loving goodbye that night. To hear her speak of it, it was more about dying on his own terms while he could remember who he was, rather than waiting for the disease to slowly grind him into nothing. It was a supremely shitty situation but if you’re doomed anyway there is some small solace in getting to decide how you go. IMHO.

This. I view this more as a "right-to-die" situation than suicide caused by depression.

I've liked him ever since he was on Mork and it broke my heart too.

I was never a fan of his, but I still remember when he passed I actually couldn't believe it. My actual reaction was like "No, he's not." I was also about to miss my transport so it just didn't register, I didn't believe it and I had more pressing issues at hand. But as time has gone on, I've really grown to appreciate him as an actor and comedian (I'm sure he was a great guy too).

I hope you're able to enjoy the media he's in <3

I ended up in the psych ward after hearing about his death. It made me think that since this rich, successful actor with all the resources in the world could commit suicide from his depression, what hope did I have to survive as well? Told my mother and she had me committed that very day.

I hope that helped you and that you're doing better.

It really did. I learned that depression doesn't care about your status: rich, poor, white, black- it can and will affect you. But with the right treatment and care, you can survive it. It was hard going, but I was able to find the right combination of medication and therapy and I was able to go forward. I had a few relapses here and there, but ultimately I was able to recover. So in the end, his death was especially bittersweet to me.

Oh yes, that one hurt, like soul deep hurt.
