The affected tone she puts on for Bly Manor sounds a bit different than how the actress actually sounds (or how she sounded in Hill House). I think she was trying to evoke a more eighties-ish sound? I couldn't really say.

It was a try at a midwestern accent.

Which is hilarious because my boyfriend and I, both born and raised in the midwest, looked at each other and asked "What... is she doing??" Took us a minute.

I only watched like half an episode but she's doing a regional southern accent, isn't she?

That's probably not her real accent.

I also don’t think she was as good in this as she was in Hill House.

Aren't there a lot of American Accents though?
And like, just because you live somewhere doesn't guarantee you have the accent.
Source: I was literally born and raised in Scotland, and people ask me when I moved here ALL THE TIME because I have some sort of American accent, that I got from TV. Also one of my classmates in highschool had a posh english accent even though his entire family had a more local accent.

I think that was the point? There are a lot of American accents, so an actor being American doesn't necessarily mean they're speaking with their natural accent rather than inexpertly faking a different regional accent.
