Huh, yeah. I can vaguely recall a few games like that, and I'm sure some of them were java or flash-based. The only one that sticks out in mind is the one where you put your LJ name in and had people run through your dungeon, and they'd live or die. But that probably isn't the one you're looking for, since I don't remember a chatroom for it.

Uh... sorry that isn't much help.

You could try googling for text-based RPGs with "sword" in the title, but I know that can be a mixed bag.
