Both this book and the movie gutted me. There's a novel written in a similar vein about a dog who escapes a medical testing lab and hides out on an artist's boat. He decides to let the dog stay and takes care of her but the lab starts spreading rumors that she's carrying a deadly disease until all the other boaters want the dog out of the area. It's been out of print for decades so I doubt I'll ever find it to read it again.
